I do something like this to get SBCL and Slime etc. up and running:
  http://common-lisp.net/~lnostdal/writings/sbcl.html

This should work for both Debian(#1) and Ubuntu and give you a fairly
minimal setup. 

Hm, but maybe using clbuild(#1) makes more sense these days; I've been
installing SBCL etc. this way since 2003 or something, before clbuild
existed.

I do not use the package manager in the distros on purpose for Lisp
software as it seems to create a mess and stuff is always somewhat
out-of-date; at least I've been unable to figure it out. APT is great in
general though, but not for Lisp stuff as far as I can tell.
