I'm not seeing much code or libraries from the ones complaining.

If I had enough time, skill and knowledge I'd write a server-side
compiler (in Lisp) for JavaScript/browser abstractions to get rid of the
if(browser.type.ie) .. else if(browser.type.ff) .. dispatching at
run-time on the client.

This would probably be useful for CSS and HTML also (or for or pr.
"widget" basis; JS/CSS/HTML combined).

..but I gotta get things done now, and jQuery isn't stopping me from
writing "pure" JavaScript when needed or when I want.

In SW I've tried to isolate the usage of jQuery as much as possible and
placed it in a separate directory/Lisp-package:

  http://common-lisp.net/~lnostdal/programming/lisp/symbolicweb/src/js/jquery/

..so if I want to switch to something else or go write-from-scratch, I
can.

Sometimes I think South Park was right.

jQuery is an awesome JavaScript library.

The comp.lang.javascript folks are insane. Let me guess, they ripped
jQuery (and every other JavaScript library) to shreds but provided no
useful alternative?

Precisely, but even worse. There were explicit claims that they knew the
insides and outs of JQ, yet no one offered even the barest of hints as
to what the problem might be. Tsk tsk. They have lightened up, tho,
since figuring out that I am not as dumb as I look.

Hey Kenny,

The c.l.j guys are mostly right that many libraries are badly designed
and contain a lot of crap code, but that just won't help you learn to
use jquery - nobody who seriously uses jquery seems to be on c.l.j.

It's a fairly good group if you want really detailed answers on the
ecmascript spec and obscure browser bugs, but they're a rude and
frustrated bunch. Even more so than comp.lang.lisp :-)

OTOH, JQuery seems to be one of the better documented libraries out
there and it has a mailing list, so you may want to try there:
http://docs.jquery.com/Discussion

Can't help you with the question though - I haven't used jQuery for
anything serious.

Cheers,
J.

Also, the "jQuery in Action" book is a great resource.
