Does anyone know its designer or any background story of how it got
designed?

It was designed by my brother, Tom Hickey, with input from me.

If you like, there's a larger version here to better match the others
on your site:

Hi Rich,

Thanks a lot for the info. I've updated the site with your names.

btw, what do you think of adding the word Clojure as part of logo? I
think it is important, since by that lamba graphics itself does not in
anyway give a hint what it is. On your website http://clojure.org/ ,
the word Clojure i think is done with css. I think that looks pretty
good. So, maybe just incorporate that word to the right of the round
logo... as if taking a screenshot as it is rendered in browser. Or,
perhaps have the word Clojure on the upper right of the blue patch,
curved with the circle?

I love logos. Very nice logo.

Hi Xah,

Thanks for your feedback and thanks for adding the logo to your site!

I was meaning to write up a description of how the logo came to be for
my site, so I’ll take a stab here...

Rich wanted a logo that seamlessly incorporated the lambda symbol and
was an icon that stood out on it’s own and be recognizable at smaller
sizes. At the same time, I was hoping to (at least abstractly) capture
the concept of a closure within the icon itself. I tried to accomplish
that with the intersection of the inner circle and the yin yang form
(i.e. the inner circle is “closing over” the yin yang to form the
lambda). The italicized “j” in the text was to further emphasize the
ties to Java.

A version of the full logo (glyph and text) can be found here:

Cheers,
Tom Hickey

Nice. I really liked your presentation on Clojure, BTW.
