ROTFL (I just hope you get the same Google ad I just got):

So much for "AI in ten years". Now I just have to do enough NI to figure
out how to move the ads someplace less obnoxious.
Anyway, if you do not understand Cells... nah, I give up. :)

I think porting Cells is a very good test of Arc as a practical
language (even at this early stage), and I appreciate you jumping in
as the guinea pig. I think it's much more informative than the "I
wrote a wiki in 10 lines" that we've been seeing. What's your
impression so far? Is there anything that really stands out, good or
bad, while you've been working on the Cells port?

Cells? The first lispy library that has more ports than users
(Sorry, couldn't resist :)

Are you sure about that?

Yes, it definitely looks as if verec could not resist. :)
That's OK, and it is pretty damn close to being true, allowing
sufficient leeway for exageration. In fact I am pretty sure he owes me a
footnote, I said the same a few years ago.
I blame Lisp and Cells, both for being so much fun that the first
reaction a lot of people have is to try reinventing them. It is one
reason this community is so useless, we would rather play than work.
Nothing wrong with that.

Always the first to pay credit where it is due, but I first
heard that line when the PowerPC came out (not sure where, though):
"PowerPC, the first microprocessor to boast more OSes than applications"

I was surprised there was no ad until I remembered Adblock Plus was
running. I wonder how many ads I never see.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
I'm guessing the revenue from those ads won't makeup for how trashy it
makes the page look for those folks not running the above.

Well that is the world's most awful place for the ad, I will move it off
to the side ASAP. As for the money, I am confused, $.01 is worth more to
me than a bunch of yobbos unable to ignore ads. I think I have clicked
on two in my life, and that was just because of the girl's
exceptional... well, I better leave it there. :)

You're very confused. Not clicking on an ad isn't the same as
not seeing an ad. The page is still trashy.
And the yobbo isn't the one irritated by the ad; he is the
one who put the ad there.

You give up before you have properly embarked on the task.
Trying to explain Cells by jumping immediately in code (especially
Arc, which is *not* mainstream) is a mistake. Some of these terms
like 'defobserver' are presumably Cells-specific which does not help
understanding. In short this will not do what you want it to do;
turn people on to Cells.
OK; this is how you might lay it out.
1. Begin with a discussion of preceding work; like Garnet and KR.
How much does Cells owe to these preceding efforts? In what way is
it better?
2. Define the fundamental data structures. What is a widget in
Cells? In the past you have cited something like this equation
widget = image + control
What is image? What is control? Does control consist of state +
function? Elaborate. This is very important because a type secure
version of Cells will require clarity about the data structures used.
3. What are the fundamental algorithms used in Cells? In particular,
what is the algorithm used to compute constraint propagation?
4. What are the fundamental primitives of the Cells system; the
selectors, constructors and recognisors?
None of the preceding requires code and in fact code should not be
cited. Then finally 5.
5. Show how your concrete implementation of Cells works and how the
user can call on it. Here you can cite code.
6. Optional; when you have done 1-5 you will have a paper.

You saved me the trouble.
