Hello group,
there should be enough lispers in Midwest to organize a meeting in
Chicago. Anybody interested? We can talk about Arc, too. Or even
Scheme.
Regards,
Victor.

I'm game. Depending on what kind of response you get, you might want
to open up the invite to functional programmers or niche languages in
general. If there's not a critical mass of Lisp, there's probably not
one of Haskell, functional Javascript, Erlang, etc either. Maybe all
together it would add up.
Looking at hackrtrackr.com, the only name from YCNews that I recognize
as a Lisper is Shooter (http://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=Shooter).
He doesn't have contact info, though, and despite talking sometimes
about his business, he is careful not to mention the company name.
John Quigley of IIT/Cleversage (http://www.jquigley.com/) used to run
the Chicago Lisp group but as far as I know there never was much
activity there.

That's what FringeDC does.

How can you have a good typing war without a few MLers?

Lisp-NYC opened it up to people who drink and can do mental hex
arithmetic, got a much bigger turnout.

Not sure where my earlier reply went, but here's a retry:
I'm in (http://www.pchristensen.com). Looking at http://www.hackrtrackr.com,
I see two YCNews users that might be interested: cstejerean (http://
news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=cstejerean) and Shooter (http://
news.ycombinator.com/user?id=Shooter). Shooter doesn't have any
contact info, though.
John Quigley of IIT/Cleversafe (http://www.jquigley.com/) used to run
the Chicago Lisp user group but it has been inactive for a while (not
sure if it ever was).
If there aren't enough Lispers, it might be a good idea to open up to
functional programming groups as well. Maybe if you throw in Erlang,
Haskell, functional Javascript, and Scala, there would be enough for a
group.

I'd come to something like that, I know for sure 2-3 others at my work
would come too.

As one of them, I can confirm that I'd attend.
Can anyone suggest a location?

The Chicago Linux and Tekniks groups meet at Cyberia Cafe[1] at 701 N.
Wells, Chicago. It's fine for prob up to 10-15 people (from the list,
it sounds like we've got 5-8. Of course, coming in from the suburbs,
I'd prefer something closer to Union Station, but I don't have any
recommendations.
Kenny and danb recommend opening up to other niche language users.
Any thoughts on this? Or should we see if we can pull off one meeting
of our first?

I like the idea of suggested location.
As per inviting other niche language users, it's very much depends on
what we want to get out of this meeting(s) :). If it's just for
socializing and discussing interesting lisp projects / libraries /
code etc. then 5-8 people sounds just right for me - any more than that and
you'll have subgroups discussing their own stuff anyway, and I
strongly suspect that people who like same languages would bond
together :).
I'd say let's have first meeting for Lisp hackers and then decide what
we want to do next.
What is your preferred time? I know that some people live/work in suburbs,
so not every day is convinient. You can leave your preferences here or
mail it to me at ··············@gmail.com, and I'll post the summary
here.
Regards,
Victor.

That sounds good to me.

Any weekday evening after 6 or so would work best here.

Hello list,
we suggest to hold a first Chicago Lisp Meetup on Friday, March 14,
7pm, at Cyberia (701 N Wells St).
Feel free to show up there anytime you want. At least Peter Christensen and
yours truly should be there.
If the timing doesn't work for you, you may fill the form[1] and
indicate better timing - we'll see what we can do, though we'll likely
to met on Friday, 14 anyway.
Regards,
Victor.

There are 6 other people on Meetup[1] that have expressed interest in
coming to a Lisp meetup in Chicago. I don't really want to spend $20+
to sign up so I can announce it to them. I'd rather spend it on
awesome stuff like student loans and mortgages. Is anyone up for
that?

We had an email discussion with some people that expressed interest
about the meeting, and I'm posting the summary here to keep c.l.l.
readers informed as well: we've decided to move the meeting from
Friday, March 14 to *Friday, March21* to avoid collision with PyCon,
which is taking place in Chicago this weekend, and to have it at
Ambrosia as Cyberia ceased to exist.
Date: Friday, March 21
Time: 7pm
Place: Ambrosia, 1963 N. Sheffield, http://www.ambrosiahookah.com/
Feel free to show up anytime you want - no reply or registration of
any kind is necessary. You may still want to sign-up using the
spreadsheet link above if you want to be updated about the meeting by
email.
Regards,
Victor.

Because Kenny recommended it, I'm against it... ;-)

Nonsense! The more people attending the better your chances of getting
away with paying less than your fair share when settling the bill. Trust
me, I made a killing last Tuesday. Don't spread this around.
hth, kenny
ps. What do you do, make them toss off a variable-capturing macro on a
coaster before letting them join the group? k

Nah! We'll have a laptop running Cells (or even ArcCells) so that
every time somebody orders a beer an observer will print the new total
along with the exact fair shares for each person attending.

Sounds good. I'm sold on using it instead of mental hex arithmetic
test as we've planned before.

Victor.
