I don't believe I saw this mentioned, but LispWorks is on sale until the
end of the month. Apologies if it's already been posted.

If you decide to chase down the prerequisites by installing their RPMs, the
first three or four levels will seem reasonable, but once you're down about ten
levels, the new version of 'echo' you're installing will end up requiring
upgrades of minor things like the C library, the kernel, or the color of the
solder-mask on the circuit board of the network device at the other end of your
connection. --Matt Roberds

Why do the pro edition isn't available in 64bits flavor, but the
entreprise edition is?

Curiously,

Price differentiation, no doubt. I'm no fan of proprietary software,
but I thought that those here who are might be interested in the sale.

For my part, I can't see why one would buy a piece of software one can't
or mayn't hack on. It's like buying a car with the hood welded shut.

Pull up a chair and pour yourself a straight one, while I tell you a tale
in which the majority proves once again they know nothing, they see
nothing, and there's nothing you can do about it.

1. Quality of the commercial software ( CLisp is nice but
uncomparable with LW and Allegro)
And though there are jewels in the OS (apache, freebsd, blender
& lightfeather comes to mind )
and complete crup in the commercial ones, there's certain things
(read games)
who don't have counterparts in OS.

2. Shifting responsibility - most companies won't even touch anything
that isn't
supported by a descent company. Though support offered by joe
nobody
might be five classes better than a big vendor, try to talk your
bosses into,
and please tell me how if you succeed.

3. GPL - maybe it's a viable model for someones , but more exception
than a rule.
    The source is usually closed.

4. Most people don't want to build their cars , they just wanna
drive .
Same with software. There is a lot of quality OS software who
should really
work on a staff like easy installation , gui driven , documentation
quality..
On windows if there isn't a few clicks installer i usually won't
even look at the
program , building from source is just unacceptable.
I don't want to be an expert mechanic, i just want to drive.

Even if the hood isn't welded i could only stare at , in order to
fix something
i must know that domain, and that takes a lot of time and effort .
Compiler construction is not something i'm ready to spent my
resources on.

Unrelated Nit.

Your use of OS for Open Source is confusing. For most people it stands
for 'Operating System'.

OSS perhaps ?

Sigh. It's bad enough that people continually invent 3 letter
acronyms to substitute for 7 letter phrases in technical papers.
There is absolutely no excuse for doing it in a book. Honestly, could
the phrase "open source" be used enough times in a book to justify an
acronym?

Anyway, when using acronyms in a new setting, it's a good practice
_not_ to assume that others know them. Best to spell out the phrase
and parenthesize your acronym for it until you are sure other will
understand it. And they may tell you, as here, that your acronym is
non-standard.

Completely off-topic, but is there any particular reason you have line
breaks inserted so as to have lines with only a word or 2 on them?
