Hi,

This is a little off-topic, but since my main interest is related to
lisp (and comp.lang.lisp) I guess this is the place to ask anyway.

How do you read and post on comp.lang.lisp? My internet provider
doesn't provide usenet access. I usually read and post using google
news, but I find it uncomfortable. Sometimes I use some free news
server (using gnus as a reader), but most of then don't allow
posting.

Cheers,

Pedro Kroger

I use the Firefox Sage RSS agregator with google newsgroup feeds.
What's cool about the google RSS feeds is that they 4 variations, last
15 topics, last 15 messages, last 50 topics, last 50 messages. You can
read them in Sage and then click on them to go to the actual google
pages. For example, for c.l.l, I have it set to the last 50 topics, so
I'll be notified when there's new subjects, but not for every reply.

So, I suppose you use (the web interface of) google groups to post?

Aioe.org (http://www.aioe.org) provides a public news server
(nntp.aioe.org). Last time I checked it allowed posting too, limiting
only the length of the articles.

I usually use google groups, but have just discovered a beta version of
groups that I think looks a bit nicer. http://groups-beta.google.com/

Are you satisfied with the service? 10 euros per year sounds reasonable
to me, even using my brazilian money ;-) I may consider using it.

Either Google Groups web interface for casual browsing or GNUS + Emacs
by connecting to http://news.individual.net/

Yes, I'm satisfied with their service and the current price is fine for
Turkey's standards.

I have recently discovered emacs and gnus and am finding it quite convenient.
Was using Google groups earlier but my spam volume had shot up. I have had
atleast 3 false positives in GMail, so I cannot ignore the spam folder for
more than a few days.

Try http://www.motzarella.org/ for Free nntp access. They provide text only
read and post, and I have'nt had many problems so far.

I've just tried using it in gnus - after 10 minutes of emacs having
100% cpu usage, it showed me exactly 30036947 unread articles in
gnu.emacs.gnus; frankly, I was shocked to discover such activity. Other
than that, it's seems to work fine - thanks for letting us know about
it.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm testing it now (with this message ;-)

sunsite.dk offers free usenet access.

i used individual.de, but then it ceased to provide free access. i've
checked some free usenet providers, and finally found sunsite.dk (now it's
known as dotsrc.org) -- it's quite reputable site and is unlikely to stop
providing free access, also i've never seen any downtimes or slow access
times with it..

Gnus to my own news server. I had fun experimenting with INN and
running a few private hierarchies some years back, but nowadays I just
keep it running to give me my dose of c.l.l (mainly). It saves me the
hassle of finding other decent news providers.

No, it's open to the public.

My access provider does not provide nntp. However, my hosting
provider does provide IP authenticated nntp access. So I ssh into my
web server and access usenet that way. So no matter where in the
world I am, I have the same posting host. Right now I am on vacation
in Florida. Normally I post from Pennsylvania.

I use Gnus under Emacs.

I guess you're more interested in news providers than in news readers,
but anyway: I use XEmacs / Gnus for both news and mails. My ADSL provider at
home offers news, but only from the ADSL line (hence my machine at home).

So from work, I use a select method of type nntp-open-via-rlogin-and-netcat
which tunnels home and then connects to the news server. Actually, that's
precisely the reason why I designed those functions in Gnus back in 2001.

But since I want a central mail and news reading point, when I'm home, I
connect to work, open an XEmacs / Gnus session which connects home to... oh
well :-)
