How come I get all these errors trying to install UCW in SBCL? i type
(asdf-install:install :ucw)
and it goes through the usual prompts and downloads the prereqs then I
get this:

The assertion (STRING-EQUAL ASDF-INSTALL::URL "http://" :END1 7) failed.
   [Condition of type SIMPLE-ERROR]

What do I do to fix this?

UCW doesn't install with ASDF-INSTALL. You have to go to the UCW
project site [1] and use darcs to pull the latest versions of the
various components that make it up.

Is there anyway to get UCW plus all the required packages with one
command? Or do I have to manually download everything and put them
together?

checkout the newly created ucw boxset:

http://common-lisp.net/project/ucw/ucw-boxset.tar.gz

caveat emptor: i created this today, it may still have a few silly
packaging bugs.

I've tried this tutorial:

http://www.cliki.net/ucw%20Tutorial

It's mainly a copy and paste of the various commands like wget, darcs and
cvs, to get the required packages. Maybe the tutorial writer should
consider to bundle a starter packet with a known to work set of these
packages to make it easier for beginners. I can provide the hosting space,
if this is a problem.
