Still heap limited, 50mb. How much is that? Hmmm. Not enough to run
Cello, if the Windows task manager stats correspond: 69mb.

Celtk is fine, tho: 38mb.

I wonder if the Mac version got a GUI now...

It would be better if their installer supports resuming
now 203MB is too much for downloading at once.

The download is about 30MB

About 200MB is the disk space required once installed.

Since their first stage installer apparently does nothing
more than transfer the real installer, I guessed its only
purpose was that it implemented a resumable transfer.

I think that it handles the installation of the license file as well...
I didn't have to do that myself this time.

Yip it's 30mb but where is the license file ,installer didn't retrieve
it
and I didn't got any link by email?

Why the hell is Franz bothering with license files.?
We won't be able to make exe without runtime
and can't use express for anything serious with heap limit?
What's the point of giving license with something free except
to annoy users?

Don't get me wrong , their IDE is great at least 7.0 was
but their license policy really bugs me.

You are the author of your own unhappiness (or bugginess, if you prefer).

(a) The whining is getting really funny: fine! A free trial of a great
Lisp and IDE! Look at the size of that download!! And license files!?
The bastards!!!

(b) Who says I need to cut an EXE to use ACL outside the limits of the
license? Kick off your "standalone application" in the startup file, and
shazzam!, I now can run my car dealership on ACL Express. The monthly
update lets them figure out how many copies you made of your license file.

Me I just downloaded and installed..
I know I have to download a new licence once a month, but
they have a program for that.
Anyhow I am getting the enterprise edition in august.

*I* can. If you can't, it's just a matter of user error.

You can't do anything serious in < 50 MB? How long have you been
doing this whole programming thing?

Hey

1. 50mb is more than generous for me, actually even 10mb is enaphe for
now

2. I'm more than thankfull that they give me a great ide for free,
thank you Franz you're great.

Anyway I found what's the problem with the license.
I donwloaded from internet caffe and didn't wait the installer
to autostart and get my license .
At the moment i'm writing this it retrieved it and now I'm
downloading patches.

Is it only me, or is anybody else getting these wonderful Franz popup
windows about every 3 hours after installing Allegro 8 express? It
might just be a Windows thing, I guess.

Filled in the form, received e-mail, downloaded 30 MB bzipped
file, extracted, downloaded the licence file, saved as instructed.

And it works like a charm on my Debian GNU/Linux (unstable,
kernel 2.6.11-1-686).

Well, part of the charm comes after figuring out how to switch
its editor into Emacs compatible mode. And not being able to have symbol
completion using TAB is a little bit annoying
(didn't search much to find a solution).

Another annoyance is about syntax highlighting and "undo" operation in the
graphical IDE:

cg-user(6): /home/fz/programming/Lisp/acl80_express/gui-builder-tutorial/doodler.htm
Warning: The multi-line text control does not have undo on GTK.
.
.
.
cg-user(8):
Warning: Source code colorization is not implemented yet on GTK (because formatted text in
         general is not yet implemented).

Maybe I'm missing something about those issues. (Or maybe people are simply
using ACL from within Emacs to have the usual comfortable environment?)

At least it doesn't have that 4 hours limitation which LispWorks had.

99$ student licence also sounds fine for many universities I guess.

Thanks for the update. I was talking about the Mac OS X version, though.
I guess you have a Mac set up to boot with either OS?

Control-. on win32 in "Emacs mode" (/not/ Emacs per se).
