Announcing Maxima 5.11.0

Maxima is a GPL'd branch of Macsyma, the venerable symbolic
computation system. Maxima 5.11.0 is a bug fix and feature
enhancement release.

Maxima has functions to work with polynomials, matrices, finite sets,
integrals, derivatives and differential equations, linear algebra,
plotting, arbitrary-precision arithmetic, etc.

Maxima can run on MS Windows and various flavors of Unix,
including MacOS X.
There is a precompiled executable installer for Windows,
source and binary RPM's for Linux, and tar.gz containing
the source distribution.

Maxima is implemented in Common Lisp; several Lisps can compile
and run Maxima, including CMUCL, SBCL, Clisp, and GCL.

The Maxima project welcomes new participants. You can contribute
in several ways: reporting bugs, fixing bugs, writing new add-on
packages, revising core functions, user interfaces, documentation, ....
Why not see what's happening on the mailing list and consider how
you might contribute to the project.

+ works perfect in emacs
+ formula export to openoffice.org (add-on)
+ mailing-list-people are very helpful

I'm confused. Which of these do I go for for MacOS X?

I went here, and all I saw was stuff for Windows.

If you don't mind being slightly behind the leading edge, you can install
maxima via fink. The current fink-supported version of maxima is 5.9.2-4.

OK, I'll try it. Thanks.

Or, if you prefer a different flavour, it also installs from the NetBSD
pkgsrc system
(ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/math/maxima/README.html,
which seems to be 5.10.0.)

Probably DarwinPorts too, but I don't use that, myself.

Yes, DarwinPorts appears to have it as well

  $ port list maxima
  maxima @5.11.0 math/maxima

I think you want the tar.gz. You'll also need a Lisp implementation --
see http://maxima.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Maxima%20ports
for some notes about building Maxima on OS X.

Try http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=4933 --
the non-Windows stuff should be below the Windows stuff.

I recommend getting the most recent Maxima version and building it.
Fink (like some other downstream packagers) has a version which is
somewhat out of date.
There have been many changes since Maxima 5.9.2.

Hope this helps,
Robert Dodier
