I think the LW development environment is much better than Emacs &
SLIME, although it's not `free' of course, so ruled out on ideological
grounds for many people. It does run on Macs, Linux, Windows and
pretty much any Unix though. Not sure what ACL offers nowadays, but it
may be very good as well.
