What would you folks out there use in pulling together a GNU/Linux
computer?...

hardware?...

software?...

...?

The computer would be used for a lot of text type processing and
related text type chart layouts, web browsing including the most
complex of web sites with the most extravagant of web sites
features. The computer would not be used for gaming.

A good friend of mine advocates for GNU/Linux with the greatest zeal.
Offering to pull together a computer that actually works as opposed to
the usual commercial desktop systems, my friend does not answer
questions about what hardware would be used as of this point in time.
The idea being that when the computer works there would be no
questions because one would be attending to the actual uses of the
computer. The argument fails because end uses will and do ask
questions. Naive questions should be answered regardless.
