Lisp-based operating systems and low level programming in Lisp are
frequent topics of discussion here. Those who are interested in these
issues may want to check an upcoming set of tools by Frode Vatvedt Fjeld:

  Movitz
  http://www.cs.uit.no/~frodef/los0/

The Movitz development platform consists of a Common Lisp cross
compiler for the x86 architecture, a run time environment, and
debugging/monitoring tools. At the above site you will find an
overview article, the image of a bootable operating system kernel
written in Common Lisp, and the sample source of a floppy disk device
driver. The code of the Movitz system itself will be available soon.
