I thought I would forward this post to this group since the LispM list
is pretty much dead and he might get some more help from the wizards
in here.

Hi.

I have become the proud owner of an Symbolics 3630, but it doesn't
work.

What happens is this:

I first turn on the console and turn up the brightness to be sure to
see everything. At this point it merely flickers randomly. Brightness
controls evidently works.

Next I turn on the main system. The fans winds up as does the disk and
after a short while a deeply toned beep comes. This is supposedly
normal signalling that the disk is ready.

The console picture stabilises and is now pretty steadily black with
some white lines (as the brightness is all the way up).

But then nothing more happens. The red "Fault" lamp does not go out
and there is absolutely nothing on the console.

As the brightness controls works and the picture is stabilising, I
have no immediate reason to suspect the console to be broken or
wrongly connected.

It kind of seems like the FEP is dead, since this should be able to
work on its own. I have checked all boards, I have even unplugged all
of them and plugged them back in a gain. The console cable seems OK,
at least there must be some connection since the picture stabilizes
somewhat. I have also tried to type at console to see if that would
generate any activity but it didn't.

Does anybody have any ideas of what to try?

Hit the philistines three times over the head with the Elisp reference manual.
