I have a old Symbolics 3620 with full source tapes.
Is there an emulator so I could run it's Lisp environment on a
modern computer. (Linux or Windows.) My Lisp Machine is getting
rather old--I bought it used 8 years ago. The programming environment
is very nice--everything's intergrated and it never crashes. (But, the
monitor cable is busted so I can't use it until I find a new one.)
I heard of VLEE--could I use it to load my tapes, in theroy.
Are the tapes now in the public domain--since Symbolics is no longer
in business or does someone else own the rights to them.
I have also heard about TI Exploror emulators--where can I get them.
Is their any project I can join to create a GNU OpenSouce Lisp OS kind
of
like Genera.
Is it possible, in theroy, to turn Linux into Genera or at least
create a
Symbolics emulator capable of loading a Lisp World/Image File.
And, lastly how would I get my old data tapes into a format that newer
computers without tape drives could use.

Since Symbolics is no longer in business is it legal for me to reverse
engineer the machine, so I can try to hopefully turn an off the shelf
computer into a Symbolics Emulator. (If I am mistaken Symbolics is
still in business--could somebody provide me with contact info. And
also tell me if they are planning to create a new Lisp machine--I'd be
intrested in buying one in a year or two if the price was right.)

Symbolics is still in business. Contact David K. Schmidt at dkschmidt
-at- compuserve.com for more information. They promised to have a
website up at http://www.symbolics.com for quite some time, but it's still not up.
It seems to be possible to get used Symbolics hardware. See http://www.abstractscience.freeserve.co.uk/symbolics/ for possible supplies.
OpenGenera was a kind of virtual Symbolics Lisp machine on top of Alpha
processors. If you can grab a copy of OpenGenera, you should be able to
run it either on a used Alpha machine (possibly available at ebay), or
on tap of an Alpha emulator.
Note that I haven't tested these things by myself, this is all second
hand information.

It's not "Open" in that way, i.e. not "Open Source" or something. You
can buy it from Symbolics, but it is not cheap. (I seem to remember
somthing like 5000$).

DK Schmidt was still selling MacIvory II (I bought one, not cheap)
boards for Nubus m68k Mac's including Genera 8.3 and layered software
last year. I don't know, if some are still available. Additionally the
were some XL1200 available (image the freight costs if you are living
in Europe).
The ti-explorer emulator is available at
http://www.unlambda.com/lispm/, but it is not complete and running. It
seems to me, that the development progress is quite low to nil. You
can get some documetation and boot images for the ti-explorer at this
site.

I have create Vlee and rev 0.1.1 is on alpha revision and not run for long
time because i not have debug all type of micro/macro istruction. This
emulator startup image of ivory board for machintosh. I have find another
people with Symbolics for start decoding of microistruction with
fep/debugger. But people with symbolics is very little group, and not have
time or interest for this project. For your cable send mail to Peter Paine

copy of tape of symbolics.
I have call Peter for purchase one 3620 but not have define shipment, this
opportunity is vanished .
The Symbolics porting into Alpha is very expansive and my contact with
symbolics people, (kalman reti) ····@mit.edu it has communicated to me that
the symbolics it is not interested to continue the support hardware and that
porting towards the other platforms or porting of a version GNU of the
OPENGENERA will not be sure the road that the owner will want to cover.
