Suddenly Lisp programmers are gathering in various cities around the world,
but with nary a peep from the DC area. Surely with all the gov and tech
bustle here there are enough people for a local CL users' group (a CLUG?).
I regret that I'm pretty new here and don't have any connections, so I don't
have anything to contribute besides interest, but I do have a lot of interest.
Anyone? Save me from DC-PerlMongers -- please?!

I'm in. In accordance with established procedures, I think we'll have
to settle on some kind of interesting bar. To split the difference
between Baltimore, DC and Northern VA, perhaps we could find someplace
reasonable in Rockville/Bethesda?

Me too. I don't mind going to Bethesda, but I don't know any bars there.

There's a micro-brew chain place who's name escapes me just a few
blocks down and a little off Wisconsin from the beltway- its quite
recognizable & the beer is worth drinking. Or, theres a nice tapas
joint nearby as well.

I read "tapas" as "topless" and wondered if speciation of
the Lispnik phenomenon has officially begun.

Its not a bad idea, diversity is always welcome... ;)

OK, so thats 3. The Bethesda TAPAS joint is nice- a wide variety of
dishes and a reasonable bar, I'd suggest that unless anyone has
another idea. I imagine a weekday evening might be easier to deal
with than a Friday or the weekend. Would sometime during the week of
March 16 thru March 22 be reasonable?

TAPAS sounds good. I can't make it Wednesday the 19th, but any other
night that week is fine.
FWIW I asked a friend who works in Bethesda about the micro brewery and
he came back with the name "Rock Bottom".

... and the "TAPAS" place is Jaleo, or something like that. Either of those
are ok with me. I have things I'd like to get to on both the 19th and 20th
but am otherwise free so far. How do we find each other once there, anyway?

How about the 18th? I was thinking a workday evening would allow
people to swing by after work, and have noise reduced enough to talk
to one another without having to yell. I'm voting for the tapas joint
just becuase the food should be more interesting- and IIRC, they make
good martinis as well.
If anyone has a really grotesque tie, we could mapcar the bar patrons
and meet up that way. I think there are tables near it too. Or maybe
we could be clever and have anyone with a Lisp Conference t-shirt put
it on the bar as a beacon.

Actually, it's sort of fun trying to pick out the Lispers without any
prearranged or obvious signals. What *are* the cues? Anyway, it's
worked for us over in the Bay Area. (Well, Harley brought a copy CACM
to the first meeting but I didn't see it on the table.)

The intellectual level needed for system design is in general
grossly underestimated. I am convinced more than ever that this
type of work is very difficult and that every effort to do it with
other than the best people is doomed to either failure or moderate
success at enormous expense. --Edsger Dijkstra

Count me in. I'm in Chevy Chase, so Bethesda's right around the
corner. Rock Bottom or Tel-Aviv Cafe are neat places.

I'm interested, but March 17-19 is the Multi-Robot Systems Workshop at the
Naval Research Lab, so I'm likely to be on the other side of town. In
general, Bethesda is good for me.

It sounds like there are a number of conflicts between March 17 thru
21. How about sometime Monday thru Thursday in the following next
week, March 24 thru 27th?
Or, maybe we could do something in the afternoon on one of the
weekends?

24-27 is clear for me.

Does anyone have conflicts for the evening of Monday, March 24 at the
Tapas joint? If not, I'll post directions & we'll meet up.

OK, so how about 6pm on Monday March 24 at
Jaleo
7271 Woodmont Ave just down the block from the Bethesda Andaluca.

My weekday nights are screwed until after April 15th - my wife does
taxes seasonally, so I'm on child-care duty. Go ahead and meet, and
I'll try to make the next one.
