In the Harvard Dictionary of Music (Willi Apel, Harvard Press), I find
the following:

"The sound of the clavichord is very soft and is often disappointing at
first hearing. However, after becoming accustomed to the small tone
and the special touch required to make the instrument sound its best,
the performer is usually won over by the extraordinary sensitivity and
responsiveness of the instrument."
