Some time ago I seem to have read that Symbolics LispMs were used for
ground processing of images from the Viking space probes, sent to Mars in
the 1970s. Is there any information on this?
There is a good NASA history series book about Viking imaging:
The Martian Landscape (NASA SP-425, 1978)
http://history.nasa.gov/SP-425/cover.htm
But it does not mention LispMs. And since the Vikings landed on Mars in
1976, this time frame may be a bit early for Symbolics and LispMs. Maybe
the LispMs were used for later missions, such as the Voyager probes?

Don't know about the Viking images, but Symbolics machines were used for
processing the Pathfinder images. See
