There's a lisp conference coming up on Oct. 31 in San Francisco, CA,
USA. The deadline for registration is Sept. 31, but since September
doesn't have 31 days I think the organizer has agreed to extend the
deadline a week. :-) Actually he said walk-in registration will be
allowed as well but you may not be able to pay with a credit card.
The last time I got to go to a Lisp conference was in 1999 when I gave
a talk. I had a great time. (Not because I gave a talk, but because
the conference was really good.)
Among the advantages of going to a Lisp conference is that one can put
faces on the people you read here in CLL. That was one of the high
points of the last conference for me. (Did you know that Eric Naggum
without a microphone is almost inaudible?) Another reason for going
is to actually sit in the same room with Lisp personages of old such
as JonL White and Richard Gabriel and such. ("There were giants in
the earth in those days...").
This conference has an impressive speakers list, and there's a
tutorial day (not included in the 4 days of the conference) that's
free if you go to the full conference. So there are actually 5
conference days if you count the tutorial day.
I understand that Kent Pitman will be giving a tutorial. Duane Rettig
is also down as a tutorial speaker, talking about simple streams.
Hmn, Nick Levine will talk about Common SQL, and someone named Earnst
Van Waning will talk about advanced Lisp techniques (Pitman's tutorial
is on `remedial Lisp' so I suppose these go together....) The only
unfortunate note is that you can only go to 4 of the 8 tutorials.
There's a strong AI thread in several of the tutorials if you're
interested in that.
It looks like Richard Gabriel will be a keynote speaker for this
conference (I heard him speak at the 1999 conference), as well as
Peter Norvig (who also spoke at the 1999 conference). Daniel Bobrow
(of Interlisp fame, among other things) and Russ Altman will also be
keynote speakers.
I really enjoyed both Norvig's and Gabriel's talks last time.

front, put up one slide with a whole bunch of words written on it, and
proceeded to talk about each word in a sort of free-association
manner, mixing philosophy, experience and just pure BS in what seemed,
at the time, to be exactly the right proportions.

tutorials speaks well for the degree of activity in the Lisp
community.

I don't know whether wanting to cross half the world at my own expense

FWIW, I'm just a regular /lurker/ and I'll be there.
I have a question, which I tried to get through to the organiser
without success and which someone here may be able to answer. The
tutorials overlap, so you can't (alas!) go to all of 'em. Does anyone
know if there's a way to let the organisers know which tutorials you'd
be most interested in? Will there be a seat limit to the tutorials?

publish or mail them so we (the ones that can't
go) can put faces to the regulars and somehow feel

Actually, if it were possible to tape things and release a CD of the
mpeg's (DiVX?) that would be great. As would making it downloadable
for a fee. I don't know how expensive that would be though.

weekend. you could stay longer, but there is a great roster of
presentations (why I am going) so you would be on your own. i was going
to pass, but when i saw the speaker list it was a frickin lisp hall of
fame, cant miss this. everybody but ilias. starts sunday but its just a
bunch of tutorials and i already know everything, so we can do alcatraz. k

You may laugh but a small printing company based in Scarborough

working on a page layout application.

I won't have the opportunity of being there. But I would appreciate it very
much if you, or anybody else who attends it, could later post here some
information or personal impressions on the event. Anything from just
"deeply bound!" to a more elaborate account would be useful.
