The Institute of IT Research at AUT has a new position available for
programmers interested in developing advanced software in a research
environment. Strong preference would be given to candidates with
excellent knowledge of LISP programming and a good knowledge of speech
and/or language research. This position falls within the range from
Research Assistant to Senior Researcher (must have a PhD), with an
available salary of up to $NZ60,000 pa. The position is, in the first
instance, fixed term for 3 years.

The Institute of IT Research is also offering up to 3 scholarships for
PhD studies in the area of speech and language research. Each
scholarship will be for up to three years at an annual emolument of
NZ$15,000 plus tuition fees at the level payable to a New Zealand
student.

The Institute of IT Research covers a wide range of research which
includes software engineering, useability research, natural language
understanding, speech, and robotics. Speech and Language Research is
currently being funded by grants from AUT and from the Foundation for
Research, Science and Technology (FRST) of New Zealand (via a NERF
grant for 2002-2006).

The current team for this project includes Professor Albert Yeap,
Professor Philip Sallis, Dr KyongHo Min and Jim Buchan (PhD student).
Our work focuses on developing a new theory of language and its
applications in the real world. The theory is based upon Professor
Yeap’s analysis of studies related to how children acquire their
first language. Various practical applications of the theory are
currently being investigated and two of which are a semantic
visualisation of text and a continuous speech recognition system.
