It seems to me that it is not capable of formating long lists. Or maybe some
variable or option controls this behavior?

That should work.  In my LW it will ask for a confirmation ("About to modify a
large region.  Continue?") if it is over 50ish lines or so.  Make sure the
cursor is at the beginning or end of a complete form.
