| Should I get rid of this Scheme bagage or is it still valid in CL?
Get rid of the Scheme baggage. Common Lisp has powerful iteration
constructions and has no particular need to prove that recursion is a
good idea. It _is_ a good idea at times, but a good programmer knows
when it is not. Using one's favorite technique (or, say, conditional)
for everything is the hallmark of a bad programmer. Common Lisp is the
one language that best allows form to follow function, if you pardon the
intended puns.
