Subject: CLISP dies during install

I have downloaded the latest version of CLISP (2.26), and a couple of
others, for that matter.  The installation instructions say to run

lisp.exe -M lispinit.mem

When I try it, I get a dialogue box saying "The program has performed an
illegal 
operation and will be shut down."

I'm running Windows 98, but don't hold that against me.

Someone must surely have seen this behavior before.  Any advice?
