DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF YORK

                                             INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS GROUP

            GRADUATE STUDY IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The Intelligent Systems Group in the Department of Computer Science at
the University of York would like to hear from exceptional candidates
interested in pursuing a graduate research degree (MSc, MPhil, PhD) in
areas related to the Group's research interests as outlined on the
following pages. The group is especially eager to hear from candidates
interested in pursuing doctoral research in automated reasoning or
natural language learning.

The Department has 6 EPSRC-funded fellowships for doctoral candidates
and other fellowships including one earmarked for the study of
learning of natural language.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of York provides
an outstanding environment for research and graduate study. It is one
of only six computer science departments in the UK whose research has
been awarded the top rating of "5*" and whose teaching has been
awarded the top rating of "excellent" in the most recent official
assessments. In recognition of the work of the Department, the
University was awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and
Further Education in 1996. The award cites the Department's work as
"internationally regarded as world-class".

To accommodate its continued development and new facilities, the
Department has recently moved into a new, purpose-built, 4200
square-metre building, which occupies the highest point on campus.
The HEFCE has recently awarded the Department a grant for a 1.6
million pound Silicon Graphics Origin-2000 supercomputer with 32
processors and 8 gigabytes of memory. This provides one of the best
resources for high performance computing at a UK academic institution.

Graduate study in stupidity
is what it is,
my humble training school,
creating bio-robots by the millions.
