Workshop #13: Dynamic Knowledge Systems and the WWW
Co-Presenter: Dr. James Veitch, Franz Inc.
Date: Aug 25, 1997
Place: Nagoya Congress Center, Nagoya, Japan

With the advent of the Web as a digital distribution mechanism for
information, the need for tools to mediate between browsers and
databases is rapidly increasing. Dynamic Objects-based knowledge systems
are increasingly filling the gap between information sources and browser
queries. These systems, the topic of this IJCAI workshop, comprise
knowledge in the form of objects and methods in object frameworks. These
frameworks constrain and contain the domain knowledge needed to
intelligently respond to queries, and to formulate responses from
multiple heterogeneous data sources. They are dynamic in that they form
evolvable and extensible systems which take advantage of changing user
requirements and new data sources, without having to recode existing
knowledge.

Research projects at the MIT lab, CMU, SRI, Tokyo University, Kyoto
University and Gifu University and many commercial AI systems in electrical

CAD, mechanical CAD, process control and scheduling are real-world examples

of knowledge-based systems developed using Dynamic Objects technology.
One of the examples that will be shown at booth #A4 in the AI Exhibition is

a research project by Dr. Hyodo at Gifu University. Dr. Tomabechi will
also be present at the booth to talk about CLOS.
