SUMMARY: Lisp & Prolog courses now offered on-line using email/conferencing
tuition, downloadable materials, M.Sc.-level credits from UK's Open
University. Email ···········@open.ac.uk for syllabus and application
form.

DETAILS:

The Open University in the UK is offering limited enrollment on its two
popular Common Lisp and Prolog courses to students outside the UK and
Europe (indeed UK/European residents may still elect to enroll in these
'Internet variants', since they can be done at reduced cost). The Open
University is a fully accredited UK university and has been a world leader
in multimedia distance teaching for 25 years. Over 100,000 students have
been awarded Bachelor's degrees since 1972 and today nearly 200,000 a year
study some course with us. It is university policy to limit admission only
by available resources, not by educational prerequisites or financial
ability. All courses are strictly monitored by external examiners from
other UK universities to ensure that the quality of teaching meets the
national standards.

Two of our AI-oriented M.Sc.-level courses are DMZX862 ('Intensive Prolog')
and DMZX863 ('Introduction to Common Lisp Prologramming for Artificial
Intelligence'). These are 'quarter-credit' or '15-point' courses (= one
half semester in North American universities), requiring approximately 100
to 120 hours of study. The Lisp course includes ALL the material in
downloadable form (text book, reference manual, software, study guide), so
there are no extra items to buy, although these materials can optionally be
obtained separately from us. The Prolog course includes custom designed
texts, a two-hour videocassette illustrating Prolog concepts and a case
study, a study guide and workbook, all of which must be purchased in order
to participate in the course. These courses can be used as preparation for
higher level M.Sc. courses, and eventually as part of the 'Computers for
Commerce and Industry' M.Sc. degree, depending on the other courses taken.
The courses begin in early May and run until the final exam in October.
Further presentations begin in November, and run until the exam period in
April.

Open University students in the UK and Europe typically have a local tutor
who presents live tutorials, interacts with them by telephone or post, and
grades and returns their assignments. Students in the UK or selected
European cities take their final exam at special examination centres. In
the 1995 academic year we are offering a limited extension of DMZX862 and
DMZX863 to students outside the UK and Europe via e-mail and electronic
conferencing. This group of students will be treated as regular Open
University students but their interaction with their tutor, including
assignment submission and return, will be via e-mail. They will have the
opportunity to interact with their tutor and other fellow students via the
university's electronic conferencing system and indirectly with the other
students taking the course and the 200,000 other members of the university
community through their automatic (free) membership in the Open University
Student's Association.

These students will also be able to attend the final examination at an
agreed site as close to their home as possible (e.g. at a British Embassy)
and get full credit for their work. This credit may be applied to an Open
University degree or used as a transfer credit at another university in the
UK or elsewhere.
