Confessed LISP-newbie (but aspiring AI student) seeks nice but not too
expensive IDE or compiler for graduate class. Mac implementation is
preferred, but I have access to a Windows machine as well. I've played
already with PowerLisp, but bumped into some compatibility problems. I'd
be willing to pay a couple $100 if I could find a good commercial
implementation, but MCL is a little steep. Any recommendations are
appreciated.

There is special MCL pricing for students and for individuals that fit
within your budget. Check out the MCL web site at http://www.digitool.com
MCL is very nice.

MCL is about as good a Lisp implementation as you can get for a Mac.
As someone who has worked with Symbolics and other Lisp machines, and
Allegro and Lucid CLs on Suns, I find MCL at least as easy to use and
almost as powerful as the other implementations mentioned.

Doesn't Digitool offer some kind of student (or was it "evangelist")
discount?? However you can swing it, find a way to buy MCL -- it's
worth it.

Alternately, get someone to sell you a Symbolics MacIvory board and
software, or TI MicroExplorer for that matter. It's outdated
technology, so you may find someone who wants to get rid of one cheap
(but they won't be reading this group!).
