Can anyone tell me why the load-foreign -function isnt supported in
CmuCL on the SGI??

If im right, the SGI-5.2 use of shared object-files makes it look a
lot like Solaris, and there is an implementation of load-foreign for
Solaris.

Sure. It's a question of resources, not of difficulty.

We wanted to do an SGI port of CMU CL for many years, but had no
access to an SGI machine, no hardware budget to buy one, and SGI
declined to give us any machines for this purpose, feeling that their
customers were happy enough with the commercial Lisp offerings. It
came to pass that in the waning days of the CMU CL project, we did get
access to an Indigo owned by another research group at CMU, and one of
my undergrad wizards did the port. He went off to grad school before
finishing load-foreign. We're all working on Dylan now, so we have no
time and little motivation to fill in this hole. If one of our
outside users wants to do the work and produces a solid, maintainable
version, we will be happy to distribute it.
