As part of my PhD research I needed a Scheme system that included the Linda
parallel model and had reasonable performance relative to C-Linda (no
interpreters need apply). It also needed one other attribute: it should be
free.
Since I received no response that such an animal existed, I spent some time
and created one. It uses DEC's Scheme to C system with modifications to
interface to a C-Linda compiler (OK I lied, the implementation had to be free
relative to the tools I had, and I already have a C-Linda compiler). It seems
to work reasonably well so at this point, if there is any interest, I'm
looking for one other site to do a test install. If anyone is interested send
email. You will need to be able to install (or already have installed) Scheme
to C (01nov91 release, NOT the newest version) with the MCC01 patches. You
will also need a C-Linda compiler. The current system is running on a network
of Suns, but I think it will run on most machines supported by Scheme to C that
have a shared file system.
I also have a short document describing the system with some test results.
If there is a lot of interest in this document I could put it up for anonymous
ftp (where?) otherwise I'll send it via email.
