                              Workshop on

Object-Oriented Programming in Lisp: Languages and Applications
    ===============================================================

                         Monday 26th July 1993

                     In conjunction with ECOOP'93
The European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming
               26-30 July 1993, Kaiserslautern, Germany

Recent years have seen the emergence of powerful extensions to Lisp
for object-oriented programming, such as CLOS (the Common Lisp Object
System), Dylan (a new Object-Oriented Dynamic Language developed by
Apple) and TELOS (the object system of LeLisp and EuLisp). Object
systems for Lisp can be characterized by smoothly integrating the
object-oriented and applicative programming paradigms. They embody
sophisticated concepts, usually not found in traditional
object-oriented programming languages. Examples of such concepts are
multiple inheritance and mixin classes, generic functions including
multi-methods, method combination, and meta-level architectures. By
introducing object-oriented meta-level architectures programmers are
allowed to configure the object system to their own needs. Metaobject
protocols provide mechanisms for manipulating program structures which
are themselves constructed out of first-class objects and for
extending the overall behaviour of the object system.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together application programmers
as well as method and tool developers and researchers to discuss
concepts and use of object-oriented programming systems integrated
into Lisp. The workshop will provide a forum for the presentation and
discussion of ideas, new developments, experiences, and research
results in this area.

The workshop is intended to focus on both the conceptual foundations
and practical applications and implementations of extended
object-oriented programming in Lisp. Discussions should focus on and
emphasize the aspects of object-oriented programming that contribute
to the success of these systems. Particularly, participants should
discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using specific language
features or meta-level programming techniques.

Relevant subjects of interest include, but are not limited to:

  - discussion of programming style considerations

  - discussion of implementation and performance issues

  - implementation, comparison, and use of language features

  - concepts and use of metaobject protocols

  - object-oriented knowledge representation

  - programming environment support

  - application development tools, environments and architectures

HOW TO APPLY:

Participants of this one-day workshop are chosen on the basis of a
previously submitted position paper. Two hard copies of each position
paper (2-10 pages) must be received by May 31, 1993 at the address
below. If possible, email submissions in LaTeX or (uuencoded)
PostScript format should be sent additionally. Each submission should
indicate the author's name, postal address, email address as well as
telephone and fax numbers. Authors will be notified of acceptance or
rejection by June 21, 1993.

Please send submissions to:
