Is Scheme close enough? Elk and SIOD are intended to be usable as
extension languages. Here are their FAQ entries:

scm might be even better. it is a bit bigger than siod (it has some
familial relationship) but has been ported a bit more widely than elk.

another item of some interest is hobbit. hobbit is a compiler which
compiles a subset of scheme to c which can be called from scm. handy
for speeding up simple code.
