Yesterday i received an advertisement from Franz that stated that SUN
Common Lisp (SCL) is history, and that anyone having purchased it (SCL)
would get a 50% discount when changing to Franz. Why is this happening,
does anybody know? SCL was originally Lucid CL, wasn't it, so is Lucid
taking over the SUN version and their SUN development environment (SPE)?

Just curious.

The word I got from a Sun Support engineer is that is just wasn't profitable
to sell and support the product line. You'll see a lot of "Sun" Software
being dropped in the upcoming months... I believe Lucid will take over SCL...

Sun CL was not just Lucid CL "originally", but always. Sun repackaged it,
changed the name, and added their own packages on top of it (e.g. SPE and
LispView), but the underlying Lisp has always been pure Lucid CL. Until
earlier this year, customers had to go through Sun for software support
(the only SCL help I ever got from Sun support was a tape with a bunch of
patch files, which had obviously been put together by Lucid).

At last week's Lisp Users and Vendors Conference, Lucid said that over the
past few years they have been dropping most of their OEM arrangements with
system vendors. This allows them to be more responsive to the needs of
real users (with OEM's, many customers would buy Lisp as part of a packaged
system or simply by checking off all the languages on the price list, so
many sales didn't represent real users), more of the sales revenue goes to
Lucid, and end users can get support from the real experts.

in fact, i just got a note today that lispview source was now being
offered via ftp.

this was posted in several news groups already, so here is just the
first few lines:

The source release of LispView(TM) Version 1.1 is now available for ftp from
export.lcs.mit.edu and xview.ucdavis.edu.

What Is LispView:
-----------------
LispView is a generic Application Programmer's Interface (API) that provides
Lisp programmers with a powerful set of tools to build sophisticated
Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications; these tools include both GUI
components and basic window system services. In addition to the available
GUI components, LispView supports output functions for windows (familiar to X
Window System programmers) as well as a sophisticated input model for ...

Isn't it just great; As a Sun customer with maintenance contract on
Sun Common Lisp you get to learn from a Franz flyer that Sun is dropping
it's Lisp.......
