Does anyone know of work on compile-time tag stripping?  The idea is
to take functions that take and return tagged objects, and compile
them so that repeated untagging/tagging of objects at runtime is
minimized as far as possible.

Please respond by e-mail, as I don't read this newsgroup regularly.  I'll
summarize if there's enough interest.
